Resistance, Reform & Public Opposition to AI and Surveillance
Not all technological change is welcomed. Across the United States and around the world, citizens, civil-liberties organizations, environmental groups, journalists, researchers, local governments, and community activists have challenged the expansion of artificial intelligence, surveillance systems, license-plate readers, data centers, facial recognition, and large-scale data collection.
Public opposition takes many forms, including lawsuits, legislative reforms, city ordinances, environmental campaigns, transparency requirements, community organizing, investigative journalism, and consumer activism.
For sociologists, these reactions provide examples of collective action, social movements, resistance, moral entrepreneurship, and conflicts over the definition of acceptable technological power.

Connecting to Deviant Behavior
One of the key sociological questions raised by this page is whether certain technologies are being redefined from symbols of progress into sources of concern. As public opposition grows, technologies that were once viewed as normal and beneficial may become controversial, contested, or even deviant in the eyes of some communities.
